The Memphis and Shelby County Metro Alarm Ordinance/Office's fundamental purpose is to reduce the number of false alarm call responses suffered by local law enforcement agencies each day and night, and through such reduction bring about more efficient and effective response via alarm permit registration/user cooperation.
False alarms over the years have become a plague and in major cities like Memphis/Shelby County an epidemic, with such vast installation occurring in residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, religious, and multi-use complexes about the county.
The Metro Alarm Office aims to work with alarm operators (citizens) to more responsibly use their alarm systems and with alarm companies to more reliably help service systems they sell. The result planned to achieve is more legitimate call responses.
Effective January 1, 2017 the fee to establish a commercial alarm permit is $60 and $ 25 to renew.
Under the revised ordinance, effective July 1, 2017 the following are fines and penalties for false alarms.
