Keith L. Staples joined the Memphis Fire Department on February 13, 1995 in Fire Recruit Class #74.

He was assigned as a firefighter to Engine-13-C shift, Engine-19-C shift and Engine-17-C shift .  On May 9, 2001, Staples was promoted to Fire Driver and assigned to Engine-16-B shift in the Orange Mound area of the city. On September 24, 2004, Staples was promoted to Fire Lieutenant and had several assignments including Truck-9-B, Training Officer at the Chester Anderson Fire Training Center where he instructed fire recruit classes, Truck-20-B and Eng-8-B in the South Memphis area.

In January 2007, Staples was assigned as the first permanent Public Information Officer (PIO) and was responsible for media relations and communications, on-scene interviews, press release distribution and press conference coordination for the department. He developed a positive working relationship with local, state and national media outlets.

On August 29, 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Fire Battalion Chief with permanent assignments in battalions’ 4 and 8 overseeing five fire stations in the Midtown/North Memphis and later Parkway Village/Airport area of the city. On January 16, 2014, Staples was promoted to Fire Division Chief and assigned to Division-2-A shift, in which he was responsible for the safe mitigation of emergencies, training, staffing and community risk reduction for 23 fire stations and five battalion chiefs.

Chief Staples current serves as chairman of the Special Events Committee, successfully coordinating annual departmental events. He also served as the chairman and conference coordinator for the 2010 Metropolitan Fire Chiefs’ Conference, which was the largest fire service conference held in the City of Memphis. He holds a Master’s of Science Degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management from Crichton College and an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science from Southwest Tennessee Community College. He’s an Alumnus of the City Of Memphis’ Emerging Leaders class of 2013.

On January 1, 2016, Staples was promoted to Deputy Chief of Logistics, with oversight of the Fire Communications Bureau, Logistical Services, Project Management and technical support.

Keith Staples is happily married with five sons and committed to his faith and an active member of his church. He loves spending time with his family. Staples and his wife Jevita enjoy helping and counseling married couples. He is a native of Chicago, IL, coming to Memphis via the U.S. Army and visits home quite often.
