During the initial visit to the center, the sexual assault victim will be met by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and a Law Enforcement Liaison. The sexual assault nurse examiner is specially trained to provide medical crisis intervention, to gather and document information about the assault, and to check for and document physical injuries. If the injuries are serious the victim will be referred to an emergency department at a hospital. The role of the Law Enforcement Liaison is important in providing emotional support and guidance, as well as advocacy and linkage to needed resources.
