Thank you for your interest in saving a life by adopting a dog! As the only open-intake shelter in Memphis, we bring in 30-50 new pets most days, and we need YOUR help to save them! If you don’t see a dog you’re interested in today, check back tomorrow!
We invite you to browse through our online listings of adoptable dogs any time of the day or night and email email@example.com or call 901-636-1416 when you’re ready to meet pets at an adoption appointment.
HOW TO ADOPT
Some dogs are already available for adoption, and some dogs are being held to see if their owner reclaims them. For pets who come in stray, we are legally required to hold them for three days to give a potential owner a chance to reclaim. For dogs who have not yet completed their stray hold, you will see a date that they become available for adoption if they’re not reclaimed by their owner. NEW! You can pre-adopt dogs who are still on their stray hold. See below for details.
DOGS WHO ARE NOW AVAILABLE
For dogs who are available for adoption now, just come to the shelter ASAP to meet them and hopefully adopt! MAS is open for adoptions 7 days a week from 12-4 p.m. and we stay open until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You’ll need your driver’s license as well as the adoption fee in the form of cash or card (we don’t accept checks).
DOGS WHO ARE NOT YET AVAILABLE
For dogs who are not yet available for adoption, you can pre-adopt them. NEW! Pre-adoptions must be done in person at the shelter and will be canceled if an owner reclaims or anything else occurs preventing the pet from being adopted. Pre-adoption fees are not refundable in the event an adoption isn’t completed, but will remain as a credit on your account toward another adoption.

All animals adopted from Memphis Animal Services must be spayed/neutered before they can go home. If the pet is already spayed or neutered, you can take them home that day! If they need surgery, the pet will stay here to be spayed or neutered. In some cases, the pet may be ready to go home the following day or the next day, but it depends completely on our adoption volume and clinic staffing. We ask that you give us the best phone number to contact you, and then make sure your voicemail is set up and able to receive messages so you’ll know ASAP when we call to let you know your pet is ready.
VISITING DOGS AT THE SHELTER
If you visit us, we invite you to walk through our dog rooms A-F to view all currently adoptable dogs. If you need more information about a certain dog or advice about what type of dog would be a good fit, you can ask any of our staff or volunteers for assistance. We have several visiting rooms and outdoor spaces where you can spend time with dogs you’re interested in to see who you connect with. You are also welcome to bring your dog(s) in to meet an adoptable dog as long as your dog is fully vaccinated. We recommend that you come in without your dog first to identify a few good candidates for your dog to meet.
Once you’ve reached a decision on a pet to adopt, a staff member or volunteer will retrieve the kennel card and proceed with you to the reception area where you can fill out the adoption contract. There may be a short consultation session. Once the contract is completely filled out, you’ll give it to the adoption clerk to process your adoption.
