Adopt A Dog

Cute dogThank you for your interest in saving a life by adopting a dog! As the only open-intake shelter in Memphis, we bring in 25-35 new pets most days, and we need YOUR help to save them! If you don’t see a dog you’re interested in today, check back tomorrow!

We invite you to browse through our online listings of adoptable dogs any time of the day or night, or come see us at 2350 Appling City Cove any time during our adoption hours.

Some dogs are already available for adoption, and some dogs have a date that they may become available for adoption. For pets who come in stray, we are legally required to hold them for three days to give a potential owner a chance to reclaim. For dogs who have not yet completed their stray hold, you will see a date that they may become available for adoption if they’re not reclaimed by their owner.

For dogs who are available for adoption now, just come to the shelter ASAP to meet them and hopefully adopt! MAS is open for adoptions 7 days a week from 12-4 p.m. and we stay open until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You’ll need your driver’s license as well as the adoption fee in the form of cash or card (we don’t accept checks).

For dogs who are not yet available for adoption, you can’t adopt them just yet, but you can put your name on them so that you’ll be in line to adopt. If you see a dog you’re interested in who is not yet available, call us at 901-636-1416 or email us (or let our front desk know, if you’re visiting our facility) to get your name put on the list. We’ll need the animal ID number, as well as your name and phone number. If you are first on the list and can be at the shelter at the time we open on the date that dog becomes available, you will be considered for that adoption.

Pets on the urgent list

Adult dogs (over 5 months) over 30 lbs
Adult cats (over 5 months)

Small dogs 30 lbs & under
Puppies under 5 months
Kittens under 5 months

Vaccinations for rabies (if old enough), distemper, parvo, and bordetella

All animals adopted from Memphis Animal Services must be spayed/neutered before they can go home. If the pet is already spayed or neutered, you can take them home that day! If they need surgery, the pet will stay here to be spayed or neutered. In some cases, the pet may be ready to go home the following day or the next day, but it depends completely on our adoption volume and clinic staffing. We ask that you give us the best phone number to contact you, and then make sure your voicemail is set up and able to receive messages so you’ll know ASAP when we call to let you know your pet is ready.

If you visit us, we invite you to walk through our dog rooms A-F to view all currently adoptable dogs. If you need more information about a certain dog or advice about what type of dog would be a good fit, you can ask any of our staff or volunteers for assistance. We have several visiting rooms and outdoor spaces where you can spend time with dogs you’re interested in to see who you connect with. You are also welcome to bring your dog(s) in to meet an adoptable dog as long as your dog is fully vaccinated. We recommend that you come in without your dog first to identify a few good candidates for your dog to meet.

Once you’ve reached a decision on a pet to adopt, a staff member or volunteer will retrieve the kennel card and proceed with you to the reception area where you can fill out the adoption contract. There may be a short consultation session. Once the contract is completely filled out, you’ll give it to the adoption clerk to process your adoption.
