Sherman Greer

Sherman Greer was appointed to serve as the District 1 representative of the Memphis City Council on January 8, 2019. As an administrator at Southwest Tennessee Community College, Sherman currently serves as Executive Director of Governmental Relations as well as Director of Athletics.  

Sherman previously served as District Director for United States Congressman Steve Cohen and prior to that appointment, was Deputy District Director to former Congressman Harold Ford, Jr.  He spent more than 9 several years in those capacities, advocating for constituents seeking relief from various agencies such as the United States Department of Defense, the US Department of Veteran Affairs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Internal Revenue Service, Child Support Enforcement Services, Memphis Light, Gas & Water, and City Services.  Sherman continues that service today working with constituents to navigate government and to elevate their concerns.     

A Memphis native, he recently completed studies for a master’s in Strategic Leadership at the University of Memphis and received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Communications from the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Very active in the community, Sherman was appointed and served on the Memphis Alcohol Commission for 9 consecutive years and currently serves on the boards of the West Tennessee branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Memphis Urban League, and the Memphis Medical Center.  He previously served on the Memphis and Shelby County Film Commission, as well as on the boards of the Frayser Community Development Corporation (CDC), United Housing CDC, the Predatory Lending Task Force of the Federal Reserve Bank, and as Treasurer of the Association for Film and Television in Tennessee political action committee.

Councilman Greer is the current chair of the Personnel Committee and is the council liaison for the Greater Memphis Chamber and the Urban Art Commission.

Sherman and his wife, Sandra, are the proud parents of three minor children and reside in Memphis, Tennessee.  He is a member of Pursuit of God Transformation Center.
