“Be disciplined, respectful, physically fit, have integrity and a heart to serve.” These are the qualities Chief Hope Lloyd of the Memphis Fire Department says she wants to see in new recruits. Here, she answers questions about the fire recruitment process for which the department is currently accepting applications. 

What are the minimum qualifications to join Memphis Fire Department?

1. High school degree or equivalent.
2. Candidate’s age must be at least 19 years by the starting date of the fire recruit class for which he/she is considered and candidate’s age cannot exceed 40 years by the date of employment. 
3. Must be record-free of any felony and/or misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude and pass required background investigation.
4. Must pass a comprehensive medical examination which meets the National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA-1582). The person must also pass a battery of tests which may include written fire selection tests and physical ability test.
5. Must have and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee driver’s license with Endorsement F as a condition of employment.
How many recruits are you aiming to bring on over the next year? The first class of recruits will not start until April of 2020. Off the registry for the current job posting we will hire 100 to 150. We do have a lateral class of 50 starting September 16.

Can you give specifics about what is asked of the applicant on the written and physical test?
Written test: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, problem solving, general tool recognition and general math.
Physical test: We use the CPAT test. 

How long is the class and what is expected of the recruit during the class?
The class is 13 weeks long. The recruit is expected to pass all written tests (they can only fail two). They are expected to learn how to use firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, to give their all, and demonstrate that they can work in teams.

Can you talk more about the lateral recruit process?  We research areas where firefighters are not satisfied working and/or living in. For example, in Illinois many departments do not hire full-time so they don’t have to give employees benefits. This causes the firefighters to have to work several jobs to make ends meet. We also make personnel contact with good applicants -- we are more able to answer their questions about our department, training and the city.
