Free Dog Vaccine & Microchips

December 2, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Petco Love and Memphis Animal Services Aim to Stop the Spread of Deadly Preventable Diseases Through Free Dog Vaccination Event

As Part of Petco Love’s Initiative to Provide One Million More Free Pet Vaccines, Memphis Animal Services Will Host Vaccine Event on December 2 in Whitehaven Community

Memphis Animal Services will provide free vaccinations for Memphis and Shelby County area dogs. The free vaccines are made possible through Petco Love’s new national vaccination initiative, which is providing one million more free pet vaccines to existing animal welfare partners, including Memphis Animal Services, for family pets in need. MAS’s Vaccine Clinic will take place at Southland Mall at 1215 Southland Mall, Memphis, Tenn., 38116, on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The vaccine clinic will be a drive-through event and will serve dogs on a first-come, first-served basis. The line may be cut off prior to 2 p.m. due to supply/demand. MAS asks pet parents to keep in mind that their vaccine events are intended for dogs whose families cannot currently pay for vaccines on their own. All dogs must be on leash.

Parvovirus and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats — the most prevalent deadly diseases affecting pets — are preventable with a simple vaccine. An estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care. To ensure the health and wellness of our beloved pets and to address this critical need, Memphis Animal Services and Petco Love have partnered to make pet vaccines free and accessible.

Through this national effort, Memphis Animal Services aims to vaccinate 500 dogs.

The free vaccines distributed at events through the Petco Love initiative will be the DAPPv Canine vaccines. Also available will be free rabies vaccines and microchips (including chip registration) for dogs.

“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented. It is further exacerbated when unvaccinated pets come into busy shelter kennels, where these deadly diseases can spread quickly, resulting in multiple deaths, skyrocketing expenses, and hindering saving pet lives,” said Susanne Kogut, Petco Love President. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these lifesaving vaccines, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.”

Memphis Animal Services has also received support from Best Friends Animal Society in the form of a $10,000 grant to offer vaccine clinics in the communities that need them. Petco Love already reimburses free vaccine recipients $3 per vaccine administered through their program, and Best Friends’ grant to MAS will enable the shelter to take their vaccine clinic out into the community where there are veterinary deserts by working with mobile veterinarian Amy Moffatt, DVM, with MobileVet Memphis.

“Animal welfare organizations in Tennessee face additional challenges in bringing lifesaving preventive care into the communities that need it,” said Ty Coleman, Memphis Animal Services Director. “But thanks to the critical support of Petco Love and Best Friends Animal Society, Memphis Animal Services can reach our long-held goal of improving access to pet wellness in our community.”
