Blue Path applications now being accepted for June 2019

If you’re a high school senior interested in a career in law enforcement, the Blue Path program with Memphis Police Department may be for you.

Memphis Police Department logoMemphis high school seniors who will graduate in May 2019 and turn 18 before starting the program are eligible to apply. You must also be a U.S. citizen and resident of Shelby County, have submitted the Tennessee Promise application by deadline, and be free of felony convictions and drug use.

Here’s how to apply for Blue Path:

  • Attend a mandatory session at Southwest Community College or other designated location
  • Complete Tennessee Promise requirements
  • File the 2018-2019 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • Apply online during open enrollment
  • Attend a 1.5-mile practice run
  • Attend the MPD scheduled battery of test
  • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA (3.0 GPA is preferred)
  • Submit a grade report each quarter

If you’re accepted into the Blue Path program, you must also meet MPD’s employment requirements, including:

  • Graduate from high school by June 2019
  • Graduate with a minimum 2.5 GPA (3.0 GPA is preferred)
  • Have a valid Tennessee driver’s license before the start date of class
  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Present proof of Tennessee Promise scholarship acceptance

On the first day of class, you’ll be employed as a Police Service Technician trainee. You’ll start a six-week training course at the Memphis Police Department Academy where you’ll earn credit hours towards your Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Southwest Tennessee Community College, free of charge.

When you complete the training course you’ll begin PST duties such as controlling and directing traffic and reporting criminal behavior. Once you complete your degree, and are within four months of age 21, you’ll be offered the opportunity to complete the remaining 16 of 22 weeks of MPD’s Training Academy to become a police officer.
