New field hospital debuts
Posted on 08/01/2019
A new field hospital made its debut a few weeks ago at Robert Church Park. The hospital is a partnership between Mid-South Emergency Planning Coalition and Memphis Fire Department, with Shelby County Health Department Medical Reserve Corps providing staff for patient care. It will serve Shelby, Lauderdale, Fayette, Desoto, Crittenden, and Tipton Counties.

The mobile hospital is a series of tents, 22 feet by 42 feet, that can be strung together and provide care in all types of emergencies. It is designed to care for patients near the scene of an emergency (unless the patient is critical) to avoid an unnecessary trip to the hospital.

The Mid-South Emergency Planning Coalition is the second in Tennessee to have a field hospital. The other is owned by the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department.

“The Jackson-Madison County Health Department has been our mentor in this journey. They have a very successful field hospital program and have been with us every step of the way,” Rick Keith, manager of the Office of Emergency Management said.

The mobile hospital provided support at the recent WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Most missions will be planned in support of large events, Keith said.
