Recycling service in contracted area to resume
Recycling service in contracted area to resume

Waste Pro, the City’s new solid waste collection provider for contracted areas such as Cordova and Hickory Hill, plans to begin recycling collection starting next week (the week of Aug. 13).

This means that customers in the contracted area who have not had recycling service in recent weeks should place their recycling cart at the curb on their assigned day starting next week.

We anticipate some hiccups as Waste Pro’s recycling drivers begin to learn the routes. As always, report a missed collection to 311 — either by calling 3-1-1, visiting 311.memphistn.gov, or using the Memphis 311 app.

The pause in recycling collection came after the City decided on July 20 to terminate its contract with Inland Waste, the previous contractor. While Inland Waste remained under contract to provide services through the end of August, it suspended its service late last month.

In anticipation of this possibility, the City had already lined up Waste Pro to take over collection prior to September. Waste Pro was able to start providing garbage collection service immediately, but needed this time to assemble staffing and equipment to do recycling, too.

This is for the contracted area, which is about one-fifth of the city. The other four-fifths are served by City crews and are unaffected by the transition.

The switch in contracted providers is part of an overall plan Mayor Jim Strickland announced in July to improve solid waste service citywide. Read more about that here
