Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Singletary was announced Thursday as the head coach for the new Alliance of American Football team in Memphis. Singletary played 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears and is a former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Mike Singletary named head coach for Alliance Memphis“I’m very honored to have the opportunity to be here,” Singletary said. “I’m very thankful to be the first head coach here.”

Memphis is one of eight cities that has been chosen for the Alliance of American Football. Teams have also been announced in Atlanta, Georgia and Orlando, Florida.

“Memphis is a city with momentum and we’re happy to work with the Alliance,” said Mayor Jim Strickland.

The Alliance begins its first season in February 2019. The Memphis team will play at City-owned Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
