Southern Heritage Classic kicks off Thursday

For the 29th consecutive year, Jackson State University will face Tennessee State University in the Southern Heritage Classic this Saturday at 6 p.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. 

Here are some things to keep in mind to keep your SHC experience enjoyable.

GAME DAY GENERAL PARKING

The Liberty Bowl/Fairgrounds parking lots will open at 8 a.m. Saturday. General Parking can be accessed via Access 7 (Central Avenue at Early Maxwell Boulevard) and Access 11 (Southern Avenue at Early Maxwell Boulevard). Parking spaces are $20, cash only. Gates to the stadium for seating will open at 4 p.m. You are encouraged to arrive early as parking is limited. Please note, tailgating is not allowed in general parking.

ADA Parking is available on a first come, first serve basis in Red Lot 7 and can be accessed via Access 3 off of South Hollywood Street. Parking is free for people with a handicap parking placard. 

Please note, Hollywood Street will be one-way southbound between Union Avenue to Southern Avenue starting at 3 p.m. to help with the flow of traffic.

TOM JOYNER MORNING SHOW PARKING

The Southern Heritage Classic will be hosting the Tom Joyner Morning Show on Friday morning. The show will be broadcast from Tiger Lane from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Admission is free and parking will also be free from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Use Access 11 (Southern Avenue at Early Maxwell Boulevard.)

BLUES CITY TOURS SHUTTLE

Blues City Tours will be offering round trip shuttle service for $15 on game day. The shuttle will service hotels in the Downtown and Midtown Memphis areas as well as the Hilton and Marriott in East Memphis. The first shuttle to the stadium will pick up between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. and the second shuttle will pick up between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Shuttles will leave 30 minutes after the game has ended. Riders are encouraged to make reservations in advance by calling 901-522-9229.

CLEAR BAG POLICY

To help with safety, the Liberty Bowl’s policy requiring guests use clear bags will be in place. Guests will be able to carry the following style and size bag, package or container into the venue: 

• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12."
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).
• Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the venue with one of the clear plastic bags.
• An exception will be made for medically necessary items after inspection.
• Clear bags will be available for sale at Tiger Bookstore sales locations located on Tiger Lane.
• Other prohibited Items in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium include umbrellas, artificial noisemakers, baby strollers, outside food and drink, camcorders, weapons, professional cameras (defined as a lens longer than 8 inches), camera cases, coolers, ice chests, bottles, banners judged to be in bad taste or bearing advertisement, flags or poles, illegal substances, beach balls, footballs, laptop computers, and laser pens.
