Latonya Sue Burrow, Chief Ethics Officer
Attorney Latonya Sue Burrow was appointed the City’s Chief Ethics Officer in 2015, and has been an attorney in Tennessee since 1993. She practiced criminal law for more than 15 years at the Shelby County Public Defender’s Office. Qualified by the Tennessee Supreme Court to litigate capital murder cases, she was managing attorney of the Shelby County Capital Defense Team.
In 2011, she started The Burrow Law Firm, litigating criminal and civil cases.
Burrow graduated from Bolton High School (1981), Rhodes College (1985) and the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law (1993).
Between undergraduate and law school (1985-1990), Burrow lived in West Germany and Watertown, N.Y., traveling to places like Paris, France, Austria, East and West Berlin. She worked as facility director of an Army library in Butzbach, West Germany, where she and her assistant worked countless hours to organize books, periodicals and the card catalog for soldiers on active duty for the United States Army.
Actively involved in community service, Burrow is a member of the board of directors of Knowledge Quest and former board member of S.O.S. (Save Our Sons). She has been a past speaker for the Upward Bound program and participated in Principal for a Day, D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training), Girl Scouts, Girls’ Inc., FFUN (Freedom From Unnecessary Negatives), and Y.W.S.E. (Young Workers Striving for Excellence.)
Burrow hosted a talk show, “Facts About Life and the Law,” currently conducts free legal workshops for First Baptist Church—Broad, is a past/present member of NACDL (National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers), TACDL (Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers), the National and Tennessee Bar Associations, and taught a “Beginning Literacy” class to inmates at the Shelby County Corrections Center for the Youth Build program.
In 2011, Burrow was elected a fellow by the Memphis Bar Foundation, “in recognition of devoted and distinguished service to the legal profession and the administration of justice and adherence to the highest standards of professional ethics and personal conduct.”
