Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch program is made up of citizens who take the initiative to help prevent crime in their neighborhoods. Participants keep an eye out for their neighbors and their homes by taking note of unusual activity and reporting the proper information to the authorities in the event of a crime. The Memphis Police also give citizens feedback on how to make their neighborhood undesirable to criminals. 

The Neighborhood Watch program is led by the Crime Prevention Unit of the Memphis Police Department. The Crime Prevention Unit takes a proactive approach to citizen interaction with a wide range of activities. 

Start a Neighborhood Watch Group 
To create a neighborhood watch group, call your local Memphis Police Department precinct and speak with the Neighborhood Watch coordinator. The coordinator will take down your information and let you know what needs to be done to organize the neighborhood watch. At this time, you will also plan your first two meetings with the Memphis Police Department. During the meetings, the Police Department will review booklets describing how to set up the program in your neighborhood. Following the meetings, your neighborhood will have Neighborhood Watch signs posted in the area by the City of Memphis. 

To be successful, Neighborhood Watch groups should stay active. Groups are encouraged to call their Memphis Police Department precinct once a year to set up an update meeting. During this meeting the Memphis Police Department will provide new information and review your past meetings. 

National Night Out 
Every year, all the Neighborhood Watch programs in Memphis are encouraged to participate in a National Night Out day. Everyone in the neighborhood is to turn on all outdoor lights. Some even have a block party. The event is to symbolize a national front against crime. 

Business Watch Program 
Businesses can sign up for a Business Watch Program, similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program. Interested business owners should contact their local precinct and begin the process of joining together with other surrounding businesses to help prevent crime.
